Being Obedient To God's Calling

Being Obedient To God's Calling

What is obedience? and how can we be obedient to God's calling, this is a question that many of us believers in Christ oftenly ask ourselves. Being obedient to God's calling is aligning our will with God's will by willingly responding to God's instructions and acting according to God's purposes. Obedience is demonstrating your faith and love for God just as Abraham demonstrated his obedience and faith in God when he left his homeland, believing in God's promise of a son and when he obeyed God's instruction to sacrifice his son Isaac. The Bible explains Abraham's obedience to God in the book of Hebrews 11:8 which states that, 8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place which he was to receive as an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was to go. Moses also showed his obedience to God when he responded to God's calling at the burning bush and obeyed God's instructions to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and by following God's laws.

What it means being obedient to God's calling.

  • Obedience requires you to trust in God's wisdom and plan even when it may be difficult, unclear and uncomfortable.
  • It simply means putting God's will above your own desires, feelings and understanding which demonstrates your love for God.
  • It involves you to completely submit to God's authority and a willingness to do his commands without any complaint or arguing.
  • It means hearing God's word and acting on it and making your decisions based on God's teachings.

How to be obedient to God's Calling.

  • By acting on your faith: Obedience is not just by hearing but by taking action. This can include sharing the gospel, worshiping, going to church and serving others.
  • By obeying the Holy Spirit: Trusting the Holy Spirit's guidance makes it easier for you to be obedient to God's calling.
  • By hearing God's voice: Reading the Bible helps you learn and recognize God's voice.
  • By praying consistently: Communicating with God constantly about everything in life. Praying helps you remain in constant communication and reliance with God.
  • By seeking wise counsel: You can get advice from trusted people who are of the same faith who can hold you accountable in your faith journey.

Why is obedience important.

  • Because it proves your love for God, the Bible tells us that obedience is a true sign of your love for God. John 14:21 says that, 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.
  • It is an act of faith that acknowledges God's power and wisdom.
  • True obedience comes from a heart of gratitude to God's grace which makes it a form of worship.
  • It leads to blessings for the Bible tells us that God blesses those who are obedient to him.

Understanding God's calling.

Understanding God's calling is very important because it involves seeking his will and purpose for your life and you recognize it as an invitation to a relationship with God, a calling to faith, obedience and a life of purpose. This calling can be a general calling to discipleship to all believers or a specific call to a particular work or role in life. It involves aligning your life with God's will and purpose, oftenly revealed through the Holy spirit, prayer and a deep sense of conviction.

Understanding God's calling involves self reflection, spiritual discernment and a willingness to follow his command. Here are some examples to help you understand God's calling:

  • Seeking God in Prayer: Pray to God to reveal his plan and his purpose for your life and Pray for God to give you wisdom, clarity, and guidance.
  • Study Scripture: Reading the Bible helps you to understand God's character, promises, and plans for His people.
  • Listen for God's Voice: Pay attention to your thoughts, impressions, and feelings. Discern whether they align with scripture and God's character.
  • Trust and be Obedient: Trust in God's power and goodness. Be Obedient to his commands, even when it's challenging or uncertain.

Here are verses that will help you in being obedient to God's calling.

  • Jeremiah 7:23: "But this command I gave them, ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people; and walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’"
  • Deuteronomy 5:33: "You shall walk in all the way which the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land which you shall possess."
  • Psalm 128:1: "Blessed is every one who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways!"
  • Luke 11:28: "But he said, 'Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!'"
  • Deuteronomy 28:1: "And if you obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments which I command you this day, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth."
  • Joshua 1:8: "This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success."

God's calling is a personal journey, and it may unfold over time. Be patient and trust in God and be obedient to him. Being obedient to God's calling requires surrender, trust, and faith. As you seek to follow God's plan, remember that His ways are higher than ours, and His plans are for good. May this post inspire and encourage you to trust God's guidance and follow His calling in your life.

Reflection:

The Peace Found in "Yes": Obedience is simply saying "Yes" to God before you even know what the request is. When we live in obedience, we find a level of peace that the world cannot provide. It’s not about being a "robot"; it’s about trusting that the Creator of the Universe knows the best path for your life better than you do.

FAQ: What if I’ve been disobedient in the past?

God is the God of the second chance (and the third, and the fourth!). Jonah was disobedient, but God still used him mightily once he turned back. It is never too late to start obeying.

Key Takeaways:

  • Listening for His Voice: Obedience starts with spending time in prayer to hear what God is asking of us.
  • Small Steps Matter: Godly calling often starts with being faithful in the "little things" He has put in front of us today.
  • The Path of Blessing: While obedience can be hard, it always leads to the most peaceful and fulfilling life possible.

A Short Prayer

Lord, give me a heart that is quick to obey. Help me to set aside my own fears and trust that Your plan for me is good. I want to follow You wherever You lead. Amen.
