Repentance And Living A Holy Life

Repentance And Living A Holy Life

What does the Bible tell us about repentance and living a holy life? The Bible describes to us that repentance is a sincere change of heart and mind, including the sorrow for our sins and turning away from our sins and committing ourselves to living a holy life that is pleasing in the sight of God. Repentance requires you to have both remorse for sin and deciding to live a new changed life under the guidance of God. It is not just a feeling of sorrow but making a decision to change your direction and behaviors. Repentance is a turning around of following God's path of obedience instead of rebellion. In the book of 2 Corinthians 7:10 it says that, 10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.

Living a holy life is simply dedicating yourself to God, being obedient to God's word and reflecting God's character by simply separating yourself from the sins of the world. Living a holy life requires an internal change where you present your body as a living sacrifice and an everyday pursuit of holiness through being obedient to God and his word and interacting with other believers of the same faith.

Why do we repent.

We repent our sins to seek forgiveness from God and to find restoration, leading us to spiritual growth, a clearer conscience and a closer relationship with God which involves changing our minds about sin, showing regret and committing ourselves to doing better which allows us to progress spiritually and frees us from guilt.

Reasons why we repent:

  • To gain spiritual growth: our sins oftenly hinder us from progressing and growing spiritually. By repenting, we allow ourselves to develop and grow spiritually.
  • To restore our relationship with God: Repenting allows us to fellowship with God and to restore our relationship with him.
  • To receive forgiveness from God: Repenting is the only way to receive the forgiveness of our sins, and it makes it possible for us to be reconciled with God.
  • To have self-transformation: Repentance is also about a change of character and becoming a better and more mindful person who shows more compassion and trying not to sin.
  • To have peace of mind: Repentance gives you inner peace by leading you to the comfort of knowing that your sins are forgiven and it relieves you from guilt.
  • To show obedience to God: Repenting is an act of obedience and love for God, as it shows your willingness to turn away from your sinful behavior.
  • To turn away from sin: Repenting helps you in actively turning your back on a sinful life.

Examples of Bible verses for repentance:

  • Acts 3:19: "Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,"
  • Luke 13:3: "No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish."
  • Proverbs 28:13: "Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy."
  • Matthew 3:8: "Bear fruit in keeping with repentance."
  • Luke 19:8: "And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.”"
  • Acts 17:30: "The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,"
  • 2 Corinthians 7:10: "For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death."
  • Psalm 51:17: "The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise."

The importance of living a holy life.

Living a holy life is important because it improves your relationship with God which leads you to inner peace, for God's peace passes all understanding. In the book of Philippians 4:7 it says, 7 And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. It also gives you the ability to represent God in the world and it reflects God's holiness for God commands us to be holy as he also is holy in the book of Leviticus 19:2 which says, 2 “Say to all the congregation of the people of Israel, You shall be holy; for I the Lord your God am holy." It involves separating yourself from a life of sin, aspiring for moral purity and growing in righteousness through your faith and by the help of the Holy Spirit.

Reasons why we should live a holy life:

  • Living a life of righteousness, holiness and purity is a life that is pleasing to God.
  • Living a holy life strengthens your faith and your relationship with God.
  • A holy life will lead you to joy, a clear conscience and freedom from guilt.
  • A holy life leads you to a great spiritual stability and inner peace.
  • A holy life can be influential to others to Glorify God through one's actions.
  • A holy life helps you build a stronger spiritual connection with God.
  • A holy life can strengthen your confidence while praying because of a clear conscience.
  • Holiness can save you from a life of guilt, shame and remorse.

Bible verses on holiness:

  • 1 Peter 1:15-16: "but as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”"
  • Hebrews 12:14: "Strive for peace with all men, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord."
  • Leviticus 19:2: "Say to all the congregation of the people of Israel, You shall be holy; for I the Lord your God am holy."
  • 1 Thessalonians 4:3,7: "For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from unchastity; 7 For God has not called us for uncleanness, but in holiness."
  • Romans 12:1: "I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship."

Let us all therefore repent and choose a life of holiness for it is pleasing and acceptable in the sight of God. When we are living a life of holiness, we are following God's will for us, as we are called to holiness and not to uncleanness for it is God's will for us.

The Refreshing Power of Repentance:

Many people fear the word "repentance" because they think it's about punishment. But in reality, repentance is a gift! It is the opportunity to turn away from things that hurt us and turn toward the One who heals us. Living a holy life doesn't mean you never fall; it means that when you do, you know exactly where to run for forgiveness.

FAQ: What is the difference between guilt and conviction?

Guilt makes you want to hide from God (like Adam and Eve). Conviction from the Holy Spirit is a gentle "tug" on your heart that makes you want to run to God to make things right.

Key Points on Repentance:

  • A Change of Heart: Repentance is more than just saying "sorry" it is a decision to turn away from sin and move toward God.
  • God’s Mercy: No matter how far we have wandered, God is always waiting with open arms when we come to Him with a sincere heart.
  • Daily Walking: Living a holy life is a daily journey of surrendering our will to the Holy Spirit and seeking to please Jesus in all we do.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your grace and the gift of a fresh start. Help me to live a life that honors You. Cleanse my heart, renew my mind, and give me the strength to walk in Your holiness every single day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
