The Holy Spirit Working In Us
The Holy Spirit Working In Us
The Holy Spirit is God's presence within us, teaching, guiding and empowering us to live a life that honors God. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not just a force or an energy, but a personal, loving and powerful being who's actively involved in our lives. In the book of John 14:16-17 it says, 16 And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you for ever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; you know him, for he dwells with you, and will be in you. In Acts 1:8 it says, 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samar′ia and to the end of the earth.”
The Holy Spirit works in us believers by transforming our hearts, guiding us to truth, convicting us of our sins, empowering us to live a holy life, producing in us the fruits of the Holy Spirit which are (Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control), teaching us God's Word, comforting us, interceding for us, and sealing believers for eternal life, basically making us more like Christ and enabling us to fulfill God's purpose. This process begins at salvation and continues daily as believers yield to the Spirit's prompting, encouraging spiritual growth and a deeper relationship with God.
How does the Holy Spirit work in us?
What does the Holy Spirit do in our lives? Here are some of the ways the Holy Spirit works within us:
- Through convicting us of our sins: The Holy Spirit helps us recognize our sins and the need for God's forgiveness. In the book of John 16:8-11 it says, 8 And when he comes, he will convince[a] the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
- Through empowering us to be obedient to God: The Holy Spirit gives us the power to obey God's commands and to live a life that pleases God. In the book of Romans 8:13 it says, 13 for if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live. Galatians 5:16-18 it says, 16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you would. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law.
- Through teaching us God's word: The Holy Spirit guides us into all truth, helping us understand God's word and applying it to our lives. In the book of John 16:13 it says, 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 1 Corinthians 2:10-13 it says, 10 God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For what person knows a man’s thoughts except the spirit of the man which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. 13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who possess the Spirit.
- Through giving us spiritual gifts: The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts to believers, enabling us to serve and build up the body of Christ. In the book of 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 it says, 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. Romans 12:6-8 it says, 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
- Through comforting and encouraging us: The Holy Spirit brings comfort, peace and encouragement in time of need. In the book of John 14:16-18 it says, 16 And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you for ever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; you know him, for he dwells with you, and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you desolate; I will come to you. Acts 9:31 it says, 31 So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samar′ia had peace and was built up; and walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit it was multiplied.
How to yield to the Holy Spirit
How can we yield to the Holy Spirit's work in our lives? Here are some practical steps:
- By surrendering your life to God: Yield your life to God, asking Him to fill you with the Holy Spirit . In the book of Romans 12:1-2 it says, 1 I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Ephesians 5:18 it says, 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit,
- By reading and obeying God's Word: Spend time reading and obeying God's Word, asking the Holy Spirit to guide you. In the book of 2 Timothy 3:16-17 it says, 16 All scripture is inspired by God and[a] profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. Psalm 119:105 it says, 105 Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
- By praying for guidance: Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and give you wisdom. In the book of James 1:5 it says, 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all men generously and without reproaching, and it will be given him. Psalm 143:10 it says, 10 Teach me to do thy will, for thou art my God! Let thy good spirit lead me on a level path!
- By listening for His voice: Pay attention to the Holy Spirit's voice, trusting His guidance and peace. In the book of John 10:27 it says, 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; Colossians 3:15 it says, 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful.
