The Transfiguration of Jesus Christ

The Transfiguration of Jesus Christ

The transfiguration of Jesus is one of the most amazing and mysterious events in the Bible. It was a moment when Jesus revealed His divine glory to His disciples and showed them who He truly was.

This powerful event reminds us that Jesus is not just a teacher or prophet He is the Son of God. The transfiguration also teaches us about faith, obedience, and the glory of God.

What Is the Transfiguration?

The word “transfiguration” means a complete change in appearance. In the Bible, the transfiguration happened when Jesus’ appearance became radiant and glorious before His disciples.

This event is recorded in Matthew 17:1–9, Mark 9:2–13, and Luke 9:28–36.

Jesus took three of His disciples Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain to pray. While they were there, something incredible happened.

Jesus Is Transfigured

As Jesus prayed, His appearance changed before the disciples. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became dazzling white. In the book of Luke 9:29 it says, "And as he was praying, the appearance of his countenance was altered, and his raiment became dazzling white."

The disciples were amazed and afraid. They had never seen Jesus like this before. For a moment, they saw His heavenly glory revealed. In the book of Matthew 17:2 it says, "And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light."

Then two important figures from the Old Testament appeared beside Jesus: Moses and Elijah. They spoke with Jesus about what was going to happen in Jerusalem, including His coming suffering and death.

Why Moses and Elijah Appeared

Moses and Elijah were important figures in Jewish history.

  • Moses represented the Law
  • Elijah represented the Prophets

Their appearance showed that Jesus was the fulfillment of God’s promises in the Old Testament. Together, they pointed to Jesus as the promised Savior.

By standing alongside Jesus, they signify that the entire Old Testament every commandment, every prophecy, and every sacrifice points directly to Jesus Christ. Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets.

Luke’s Gospel adds an incredible detail: Moses and Elijah were speaking with Jesus about His exodus His upcoming departure, suffering, and crucifixion in Jerusalem. Even in the height of heavenly glory, the focus remained on the cross and the salvation of mankind.

This moment confirmed that Jesus was the promised Savior sent by God.

Peter Speaks on the Mountain

Peter was overwhelmed by what he saw. He suggested building three shelters one for Jesus, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.

While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from heaven said: “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.” The disciples fell facedown in fear when they heard the voice of God. In the book of Matthew 17:5-6 it says, "He was still speaking, when lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, 'This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.' When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces, and were filled with awe."

Jesus Comforts the Disciples

After the voice spoke, Jesus came to the disciples and touched them. He said, “Get up. Don’t be afraid.”

When they looked up, Moses and Elijah were gone, and only Jesus remained.

As they walked down the mountain, Jesus told them not to tell anyone what they had seen until after His resurrection.
